After The Rain

June 5, 2022

Gardens can be truly magical after a refreshing spring rain. Colors look more vibrant, plants appear more lush, and the air is crisp. At this particular moment, I was interested in finding frame-filling patterns in the foliage. A prime candidate for such patterns is fern, with its refined fractal leaves, and with diagonal lines being emphasized by the larger and smaller stems.

When the sun comes out after a rain shower, remaining droplets on leaves in a delicate pattern catch the light and look like a thousand diamonds scattered everywhere you look. They also act as magnifying glasses highlighting intricate textural details on the leaves, and can sometimes even reflect their surroundings in intriguing ways.

It is particularly fun to try out different framings and aspect ratios with such a pattern-focused subject. As a matter of fact, these leaves filled a whole bed providing plenty of composition options. I am often drawn to square formats for black and white images that highlight patterns and textures.
